One of the long-tail side effects of Tottenham completely refreshing their midfield with the purchases of Mateus Fernades and Sandro Tonali is the dissatisfaction of Spurs’ EXISTING midfielders. The one we know about is Lucas Bergvall, who through intermediaries has made clear his desire to leave the club as he will most certainly have a reduced first team role next season.
That’s ruffled a few feathers, as you can imagine, but according to a report from a Sky Sports reporter, the club has made their
intentions clear: they will not sell Lucas Bergvall, and they have let him know that.
Lucas is — or at least was — at the World Cup in North America with Sweden, before they got drummed out by France in the Round of 32. He’s presumably taking his mandated competition break; it’s not known when he would return to London for preseason training.
The tweet from Bridge above is a little ambiguous. It states that the club has no intention of selling him (Bergvall is under contract at Tottenham until 2031 and so doesn’t have a ton of leverage) and that makes sense considering his high potential and the fact the club has already committed significant resources towards his development. What we don’t know is whether Lucas is being told to be quiet and patient for the next couple of years, or if the club would be willing to sanction a loan for him to continue getting significant first team minutes elsewhere.
I’d be willing to guess Roberto De Zerbi will have a nice word with Lucas when he gets back to London and clarify his plans for him, and how he can fit into the next great Tottenham Hotspur team. It has to be frustrating to Lucas knowing he’ll be taking a step back after playing a huge role in the past two seasons, but he’s also a valuable player and asset for the club and they’re unlikely to want to cut bait on him when he’s so close to becoming club-trained and homegrown, both very valuable if Spurs return to European competition.
We’ll see what happens, but it looks like Lucas isn’t going anywhere for now.
