After going into the halftime interval two goals to the good via efforts from Serge Gnabry and Luis Diaz, it looked like Bayern Munich was going to cruise to a routine victory at the WWK Arena against Augsburg. Michael Olise scoring very early on in the second half further cemented the presumption that the match could’ve very well turned into a routing from the reigning Bundesliga champions, but a spirited second half effort from Augsburg and a pair of goals between Kristiajan Jakic and Mert Komur
set the stage for a cagey finish for Bayern.
On the overall balance, despite Augsburg’s second half fight back, Bayern out shot their opponents 20 to 10, and registered 10 shots on target to Augsburg’s 3. In either half, there were chances that the German Rekordmeister quite arguably should have converted, but keeper Finn Dahmen made life a bit more difficult for Vincent Kompany’s side with the seven saves he made throughout the match. Even when the match had gone to 3-2, there were plenty of openings for Bayern to kill the game off as Augsburg were pressing hard for an equalizer, but the lack of a final product late on made it a nerve-wracking watch from the Bayern bench.
After the match, Kompany rued the number of missed chances his side had, knowing that having been more clinical could’ve made life far more comfortable. For the Belgian manager, though, a win is still a win and putting things into context sees that it’s two wins from two to start of the Bundesliga campaign in addition to the first round DFB-Pokal win at Wehen Wiesbaden.
“We missed many chances again today. The first half was good, the second half not so good. Not everything is perfect right now, but we have to put things in context – we had a very short preparation, short vacation. We played seven games (including preseason) and won all seven, including three away games. I know that everything is not perfect, but everything is not bad either. We were good on the ball, we didn’t concede many chances, but we have to stay calm in certain situations and take momentum off the opponent. Again, we have to put things in their context, I think we created 9 big chances today. We know what we have to improve,” Kompany explained after full time (via @iMiaSanMia).
Looking on the bright side from what Kompany can take from the narrow three points at Augsburg, he was pleased with the fact that Bayern were able to create so many chances. The might’ve been far better with finishing in week one against RB Leipzig, but there’s always going to be matches, especially away from home, where luck just won’t fall Bayern’s way in front of goal, and being able to keep that composure in those situations is vital. “We know what we have to work on. It’s true that we’d have decided the game earlier today had we scored five goals from the chances we created. The most important thing is that we’re creating lots of chances. There are some things we have to do better, but not everything,” Kompany rationalized.
Amid all of the transfer craziness surrounding Bayern Munich’s work with Chelsea over a loan deal for Nicolas Jackson, there was an actual game to be played — and Bayern Munich was up to the task even if a slow start and a midgame loss of focus might have given Die Fuggerstädter some hope.
