The No. 21 Texas Longhorns’ dominant win over the then-No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Showdown arrested some of the downward momentum they faced after a disappointing loss to the Florida Gators.
The Horns held the Sooners without an offensive touchdown for the third time in four games, while the offense looked good enough to avoid head-scratching losses. Running back Quintrevion Wisner returned to form and quarterback Arch Manning showed up with big plays in key moments to keep the offense on track.
It didn’t hurt that the defense forced three interceptions and brought down Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer five times in the contest.
A possibly revitalized Longhorn squad heads back out on the road to Lexington to take on the Kentucky Wildcats, who need revitalization of their own.
Head coach Mark Stoops came into the season on the hot seat and hasn’t done anything to cool it down, heading into the bye week 2-3, with all three losses to SEC opponents. They made a switch at quarterback, but still can’t get the offense going, while the defense has allowed more than 30 points in all three of their SEC games this year. A loss doesn’t really change their fortune much, while a win over Texas will do a lot to change their fortune, making them a dangerous opponent for Texas.
