Ahead of their series opener against the Phillies, the Mets have placed right-hander Reed Garrett on the 15-day IL. retroactive to August 23, with right elbow inflammation. In a corresponding move, the club has selected the contract of left-hander José Castillo to join the bullpen. To make room on the 40-man roster for Castillo, Frankie Montas has been transferred to the 60-day IL.
Garrett was enjoying a mostly-solid season for New York up until a few weeks ago. He owned a 2.45 ERA through his first
49 appearances this year, but has allowed at least one earned run in five of his last six outings dating back to August 10. In that span, he’s been tagged for eight earned runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings while striking out six, walking two, and allowing three homers. In 52 1/3 innings, he has pitched to a 3.61 ERA and a 3.36 FIP, with 62 strikeouts and 24 walks across 55 outings.
The Mets will turn to the 29-year-old Castillo with Garrett on the shelf. Castillo owned an unsightly 11.37 ERA across five outings with the Diamondbacks before Arizona traded him to the Mets for cash considerations in May. Since then, he has posted a much more palatable 2.19 ERA and 2.79 FIP in 14 appearances with the Mets. He has struck out 17 and walked six across 12 1/3 innings for New York. During his tenure, he has been designated for assignment twice but managed to remain with the organization.
