This past weekend, the Boston College women’s lacrosse team traveled over to Stony Brook, NY to participate in the 2026 NCAA tournament, seeking their ninth-straight Final Four appearance. After dispatching Yale in the first round, the Eagles fell to the hosting Stony Brook Sea Wolves in the second round, ending their season.
BC got off to a promising start to the weekend on Friday when they completely shut down the Yale offense on the way to a 10-4 victory. Eagles goaltender Shea Dolce allowed just
4 goals and made 9 saves, despite BC committing more turnovers and allowing the same number of shots on goal during the game. Boston College found most of their advantage by winning draw controls and converting on free position shots. Kylee Colbert was especially effective with her 6 goals, outscoring the entire Yale team and putting the nail in the coffin with two late fourth quarter scores. After scoring five unanswered goals in the 2nd quarter, the Eagles never looked back.
The game against Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon was a different story. BC could get absolutely nothing going to start the game, in large part due to messy turnovers and stifling Stony Brook defense. Before too long, SBU had taken a commanding 7-1 lead in the second quarter. BC shortened it to 7-3 by halftime, but it was expanded back out to 9-3 just a few minutes into the second half.
Then the Eagles stepped up, like they so often do in the postseason. BC scored four unanswered goals in five possessions, two of which came on free position shots and another two came from Colbert in the open field. The turnovers had dissipated and BC was able to stop the bleeding, getting themselves back into a 2-goal game as the 4th quarter began.
SBU picked their physicality back up to respond to BC’s run and the rest of the game was very back-and-forth. The Eagles started turning the ball over again and Stony Brook took advantage, knocking in their 10th goal shortly into the new period. After each team went up and down the field the next few minutes without much to show for it, Shea Dolce made a huge save that sparked a new BC possession and eventual goal. Both teams had turnovers in the following sequence, but BC found themselves with possession again and worked down the shot clock until Giulia Colarusso was finally able to find the back of the net, bringing the Eagles within one score of tying the game.
But from there, Stony Brook dominated possession. They won the ensuing draw control, bled clock, and picked up three separate rebounds off of missed shots and saves. They didn’t need to score, they just had to keep possession away from the Eagles and run out the clock. BC was finally able to secure the ball with under a minute left in regulation, still down by 1, but a final free position attempt came up no good. SBU emerged in a nail-biter to advance to the next round, sending Boston College home in the second round.
