Germany managed to lose to Greece despite completely dominating the statistical battle, which makes the result both frustrating and difficult to explain for some fans.
Germany finished the match with 76% possession, 16 total shots, five shots on target and 30 touches in the opposition box. Greece had just 24% possession, eight shots and one shot on target — and still walked away with a 1-0 victory.
That is the sort of result that can either be dismissed as an unfortunate one-off or viewed as a warning
sign.
The concern isn’t necessarily that Germany was outplayed. Quite the opposite. The team controlled the match, moved the ball effectively and created enough opportunities to expect a different result. But ultimately, Germany couldn’t turn that dominance into a goal.
And that could raise raise some legitimate questions about Jürgen Klopp’s strategy for this international break.
Is the problem simply finishing? Was the lack of attacking efficiency an isolated issue? Or did the defeat expose larger problems with Germany’s ability to break down a team that is willing to defend deep and concede possession? Or…was it simply not having a true A-team together to face a quality side like Greece.
The Nations League table doesn’t exactly make the situation look better, either. After two matches, Germany has just one point and sits third behind Greece and the Netherlands.
There is obviously plenty of football left to play, and one strange 1-0 defeat shouldn’t define an entire campaign.
