Joshua Kimmich scored his first goal of the season in any competition in Bayern Munich’s win over Mainz on Saturday. Although he is known for his yelling celebrations, today’s looked different. He was visibly emotional as he ran to the corner and jumped and punched the air before his teammates surrounded him. After the match, he was interviewed and revealed that the emotions had a lot to do with the recent passing of his father.
Kimmich after the match (as recorded by @iMiaSanMia), “Yeah, obviously,
given what happened with my dad, it was very emotional. Otherwise, I don’t score that many goals anyway. So, that was the first thing I thought about after scoring. It was definitely more emotional than usual.”
Kimmich opened the scoring in the 14th minute. It came after a ball turned over to Harry Kane, and Kimmich made the run from behind midfield. Kane played the ball to Kimmich, who dribbled toward the 18-yard box. He shot from just outside the box and picked out the top corner. It was a great goal that allowed him to celebrate with the weight of everything going on in his life.
