Last Saturday was a good day for Georgia Football and a bad day for Alabama Football, and thus a good day for the world. And maybe it’s just because I’m hungry at the time of writing this, but I am glad to have a few cupcakes to snack on to start the 2025 season.
Week 2 against the Austin Peay Governors should provide another opportunity for Gunner Stockton et al. to iron out a few more kinks before getting into the SEC slate. And while Austin Peay is coming off an impressive win against Middle Tennessee
State, this game shouldn’t provide too much stress. The biggest question about this matchup is: who is Georgia Governor Brian Kemp rooting for? His alma mater, or his fellow governors? The least he could do is release a statement.
Although I never want Georgia to shy away from competition, and I don’t think they ever would, the 2025 Dawgs feel like a team that will need some time before they find their footing. Breaking in a new-ish QB is one thing, breaking in four new offensive linemen is another thing, and trying to revitalize a receiving room is yet another thing. Add those up, and that’s three things. And having a couple of games to work on those is fine by me.
In a week where Texas coaches and players are fielding questions about Arch’s expectations, Alabama fans are having a tidal wave of meltdowns, and Dabo Swinney and Brian Kelly are making headlines at each other’s expense days after their game, it is nice to have Georgia quietly sitting outside of the spotlight.
DGD and known philanthropist Travon Walker mentioned during his sideline interview in last week’s game that the 2021 team felt like they had been written off and had something to prove, even though they started the season ranked #5. The intensity and ferocity of that team showed throughout the season.
With another yummy yummy cupcake week and another week out of the spotlight, maybe the 2025 Dawgs can regain some of that fire that seemed to be missing last season. Even while winning the SEC (again), the intensity wasn’t always there. Some could say this is a product of their own success, which isn’t the worst problem to have.
But if the program wants to get back to the top, the energy will need to come back. Maybe one more cupcake will provide just enough sugar to hyper them up.
As the Austin Black Eyed Peays famously said, “let’s get it started (hah), let’s get it started in here.”
