With Bayern Munich opening the Bundesliga season against VfB Stuttgart on Friday, there are already plenty of talking points surrounding Vincent Kompany’s potential starting XI.
Bild put together its projected lineup (admittedly that VfB Stuttgart lineup looks pretty darn good) for Bayern Munich and it is not shocking, but it could be giving an idea of Kompany’s plans for the season:
The biggest surprise (at least
to some) in this projected lineup might be at left-back, where Nathaniel Brown gets the nod over Alphonso Davies. Brown has already shown that Kompany is willing to trust him in important matches, as he started at attacking midfielder in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup victory over Borussia Dortmund.
Choosing Brown over Davies would certainly be an interesting statement for the Bundesliga opener. Davies brings experience, recovery speed and years of familiarity with Bayern Munich’s system, but Brown offers plenty of energy and has impressed since arriving. Giving him the start against Stuttgart could also be a sign that the competition for the position is genuinely open rather than Davies automatically holding the spot.
There are questions elsewhere, too. With Jamal Musiala unavailable, who should take on the creative responsibility behind Harry Kane? Can Michael Olise and Luis Díaz provide enough attacking threat? And does the midfield pairing of Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović provide the right balance?
Bayern Munich enters the opener after beating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the Supercup, while Stuttgart cruised past Hansa Rostock 4-0 in the DFB-Pokal.
