For those following our Coen Brothers’ film-themed news and notes – we aren’t done with the corpus yet, but I’m taking a break on them for the weekend. Speaking of breaks, the Guardians broke the Rays’ seven-game win streak last night, winning 7-1 behind a strong Gavin Williams’ outing and multi-hit games from birthday boy Steven Kwan, Jose Ramirez and Nolan Jones.
You can read the usual excellent Nick recap here. I was pleased to see George Valera get his first RBI and also put up a competitive at-bat
against a very tough lefty reliever throwing 101 mph. I was also pleased to hear Guardians’ radio play-by-play man Tom Hamilton say about Valera: “Now, hopefully, he gets a LOT more playing time over the next month. See what he can do! Why not??” Exactly, Hammy. Please, tell Stephen Vogt that.
The Mariners are the third wildcard leader, right? Well, yes, but they’ve lost four in a row and seven of ten. The Guardians are somehow still only 2.5 games out, the Rangers are half a game out, Royals are just 1 game out and the Rays are 2 games out. I would assume the Mariners will right the ship, but, as a franchise, they are known for spectacular collapses.
Matt Dallas and I did a shorter Disgusting Baseball podcast focused on Guardians’ pitchers which you can listen to here.
Sounds like Eric Longenhagen is upgrading Guardians’ prospect Ralphy Velazquez but he’s yet to catch on to the fact that Ralphy looks viable in the corner outfield…
It’s up to Tanner Bibee to step up and save the season tonight against Shane Baz. Hopefully, this newly revitalized Jose shows up as well!
