The atmosphere in Gelsenkirchen was already tense before Bayern Munich and Schalke 04 even kicked off, and the fallout had a major impact on the away end.
According to a report from Abendzeitung (via @iMiaSanMia), Gelsenkirchen police said that Bayern Munich supporters “immediately sought confrontation with the home fans.” Police then prevented a group of several hundred Bayern supporters from entering the stadium so that officers could record their personal details.
Around 500 Bayern Munich fans were
issued exclusion orders ahead of kickoff. In response, the Ultras decided to boycott the match, resulting in a strikingly different atmosphere than what Bayern supporters usually bring to away games.
An exclusion order is a directive from police for an individual or individuals to not enter a specific area or location, which means that 500 fans were banned from entering the stadium.
There were hardly any banners, very little organized chanting, and almost none of the coordinated support normally associated with the Bayern Munich away end. It was a bizarre backdrop to an already frustrating night for Vincent Kompany’s team, with Bayern Munich ultimately being held to a goalless draw by Schalke.
