Alex Matos made his Chelsea debut a day before his 19th birthday, and at the time, it looked like he might be destined for bigger things at the club. He had arrived just a couple months prior from Norwich City’s academy and here he was replacing Enzo Fernández to help see out a win at Craven Cottage.
But just two years later, Matos is gone, having joined Sheffield United today in a permanent transfer.
The 20-year-old midfielder would only make just one more senior Chelsea appearance, in the League
Cup, before spending the second half of 2023-24 on loan in the Championship, at Huddersfield Town. He would return to the division last January, joining Oxford United temporarily. He did well in both of those assignments, and now Sheffield United will be hoping that trend continues. They have lost all five of their games so far this season.
“When I heard of the interest it was a no-brainer move for me. I feel this is right time for me to move on and play regular football and this is the right club for me. […] The loans developed me quite a lot, it is a good league, as has growing up at Chelsea, but I’m very happy to be here now, getting players in recently shows how big a club this is, and it looks like a strong team. Exciting times ahead.”
