It didn’t take long for the rookies to make their mark in Atlanta. On Sunday night in a daunting environment in Minnesota, all four rookies who are either starting or playing significant snaps made a notable impact. Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr. earned their first sacks. Xavier Watts and Billy Bowman Jr. produced their first interceptions. It was a gratifying night for a front office that has endured its share of misses and losses.
The rookie class hasn’t quite hit those heights since that memorable win. Injuries have plagued Walker and Bowman Jr. It’s still a work in progress for Pearce Jr. as an undersized edge rusher. Watts has played the most and been relatively dependable, outside of a few missed tackles and poor angles against Buffalo and San Francisco. How rookies use setbacks as teachable moments is crucial for their development.
Walker has overcome hamstring and groin injuries to produce his best performance against New England. Watts and Pearce Jr. had their share of savvy plays. Based on what he showed earlier in the season when healthy, Bowman Jr. has enormous upside as a ball-hawking, physical nickel cornerback.
Who do you think has been the best rookie in Atlanta so far this season? Do you believe this team can get on track with all four playing vital roles? Let us know below.
