We’ve seen some robot vs. robot cage matches, and those were pretty cool. Now we have what’s being billed as the first human vs. robot cage match, and it’s … pretty freaky?
We’ve all heard of how artificial intelligence and robots are going to take over the world and put everyone out of a job. That may include cage fighters if the technology on display here continues to improve. At a small private 100 person event in Austin, Texas, on Friday September 18th, YouTuber Frankie LaPenna took on a six foot
tall T-800 Terminator-style robot in a cage.
We’re still waiting for the full video to be released, but it looks like the Terminator robot wins from the clips we’ve seen. The T-800 was looking pretty stiff at the start, and Frankie managed to bulldoze in with some decent combos to punch the robot in the chest and face. Then the Terminator fired off a front kick that sent the lightly armored human flying across the cage to crumple on the floor. Hasta la vista, baby.
The event was put on by CIX, the same person who organizes REK fights where robots controlled by human pilots fight each other in a plexiglass-walled octagon. Their website says that REK has already held 13 events in nine cities, with most taking place in San Francisco.
We doubt this will be the last time humans end up fighting robots in hand to hand combat. Based on the way the world is going, perhaps we’ll all have to fight off a six foot Terminator in the post-apocalyptic wasteland of America in the next ten to twenty years. Make sure to train how to hit the off switch, and watch out for those robot teeps, they look deadly.
