No. 17 TCU faced off against No. 11 Texas Tech in a marquee matchup on the road this past Friday and battled out a 1-1 draw. Morgan Brown scored the only goal of the game for the Horned Frogs, as TCU had to battle back from an early 1-0 deficit. This was TCU’s first tie of the year and the Horned Frogs moved to 10-2-1 and 4-1-1 in conference.
TCU’s defense was tested early, as Texas Tech started the game aggressively, recording two shots in the first six minutes of action. It was a physical game from
the first whistle, as the teams combined for five fouls in the first 12 minutes of the game.
Seven Castain recorded the first shot on goal, which was saved by the Texas Tech goalkeeper, for the Horned Frogs in the 12th minute. Olivia Geller started at goalkeeper for the Frogs and was tested for the first time in the 15th minute by a Texas Tech shot on goal, which she saved. Texas Tech did a good job to retain possession, however, and recorded three more shots in the 15th minute, one of which was on goal and saved by Geller.
The chippiness continued throughout the first half, as Texas Tech was whistled for a team yellow card in the 17th minute. Just seven minutes later, however, the Red Raiders scored the first goal of the game, as Raleigh Greason gave Texas Tech a 1-0 lead. Emma Yolinski looked to respond for the Horned Frogs with a shot that missed high in the 25th minute.
After a Sydney Becerra shot attempt in the 31st minute that missed left, both defenses settled in and neither team attempted another shot until after halftime. Texas Tech held a narrow lead in the shots on goal department with three compared to just one from TCU at halftime as neither offense was able to consistently generate chances. Tech also led in fouls at the half with 10 compared to just one from TCU.
Texas Tech had the first chance of the second half with a shot that missed high. The Red Raiders continued to play physically into the second half and were whistled for a second yellow card in the 58th minute. AJ Hennessey recorded the first shot of the half for the Frogs in the 58th minute and just two minutes later, Brown drew the Horned Frogs level with a beautiful header off of a corner kick feed from Becerra.
Texas Tech looked to regain the lead with a shot on goal that was saved by Geller in the 60th minute. Tech again tested Geller in the 64th minute, but the TCU goalkeeper made a nice play to keep the game tied. The TCU offense hit a bit of a lull following their goal, as the Horned Frogs did not record a shot the rest of the game following the goal. Texas Tech launched another shot on goal in the 77th minute that was saved by Geller.
The final scoring chance of the game came on a Texas Tech shot that hit off the crossbar to preserve the 1-1 tie. The Horned Frogs battled for a tie against a tough team thanks to a clutch goal from Brown and an excellent performance from Geller in goal.
TCU has an important two game homestand coming up this week as the Big 12 leading Baylor Bears will travel to Fort Worth for a game this Thursday at 7 p.m. before the Frogs host Oklahoma State this Sunday at 1 p.m.
