After weeks of speculation, it is now official — former Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and FC Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski is headed to MLS and will play for the Chicago Fire.
Lewandowski, who had 19 goals and four assists in 46 games across all competitions for FC Barcelona last season, will now become the focal point of the attack for the Chicago Fire. Through 14 games in the MLS, Chicago sits in third-place of the Eastern Conference and will undoubtedly get a boost from one of the best
scorers from the last decade:
Lewandowski was always rumored to fancy ending his career in the United States and now, he will get his chance. Previously, Lewandowski was linked to the two Los Angeles teams — LA Galaxy and LAFC — but the Windy City ultimately won his affection.
“From the day Joe Mansueto and I met for the first time, we set out to build a world-class Club that inspires greatness, unites Chicago and wins championships. Robert embodies those values and represents the standards this city deserves: a champion and a competitor,” said Gregg Berhalter, Chicago FC director of football and head hoach in a release from the club. “His arrival reinforces our ambition to compete for trophies and raises the standards for the Club to heights worthy of this city. We cannot wait to get to work with him and have Chicago see first-hand why he is among the most revered sporting icons in the world.”
