Juventus needed a Canadian domino to fall before they could add somebody new in attack. Earlier Monday, the penultimate day of the summer transfer window, that domino fell as Jonathan David’s loan deal to Atlético Madrid was finalized by Juventus’ front office.
And now, a very large German appears to be the man who replaces David.
Juventus are closing in on a loan deal to sign Newcastle forward Nick Woltemade, according to reports from Sky Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio and IlBianconero’s Romeo Agresti
among others on Monday. The deal looks to be just a simple dry loan for the 2026-27 season, with Juventus reportedly paying €5 million for a loan fee and there being no option to buy Woltemade on a permanent basis come next summer.
Woltemade and Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee were both linked to Juventus as potential David replacements ahead of Tuesday’s deadline. But as much as Zirkzee has been an off-and-on rumored target of Juve for the better part of the last year or two, it’s now Woltemade that has surprisingly come to the forefront as the potential final piece to this summer’s additions in attack.
Woltemade was one of the many massive transfers made by Newcastle over the last couple of years following their Saudi ownership takeover. A standout for Stuttgart, Woltemade cost Newcastle an initial €75 million — which, considering the kind of fees we’ve seen from Premier League clubs this summer, still feels like big-time fee no matter the player involved.
But his first — and what looks to be potentially only — season at Newcastle didn’t totally go as the transfer fee and investment might have hoped for. Woltemade finished with 11 goal contributions in the Premier League, playing 1,902 minutes over the course of 33 league appearances. His time with Newcastle started strong but seriously tailed off after Christmas, with only one of his eight Premier League goals coming after the turn of the calendar to 2026.
So here’s Juve coming in for another buy-low player who is coming off a relatively disappointing 2025-26 season. Only time will tell to see if it’s one too many reclamation attempts this season, but this move is certainly not one that many outside the walls of Continassa were thinking of a few days ago.
