When it comes to self-awareness, Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson seems to be lacking, as his infamous press conference proved. On top of that, his play on the field has been even worse, including Week 1’s destruction at the hands of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now, rarely does one player cause a loss or create a win. When it happens, it is often the quarterback who can pull it off.
Right or wrong, the head coach and quarterback tend to get the heavy end of the blame and credit for a team’s performance.
HC Todd Monken and Watson earned the fans’ ire after Week 1, which was only added to when Monken backed his starting quarterback.
According to Watson, continuing to show a lack of self-awareness, a lot of that is because the media sets unrealistic expectations for him:
As pretty much everyone who responded said, at this point fans are just hoping for adequate or average play from the quarterback. Forget 400 yards and five touchdowns. Forget living up to his contract. Forget not being the primary reason the team lost.
Average. Adequate.
The sunk cost of the trade and the contract, on top of moving on from Baker Mayfield, is water under the bridge at this point. Fans and media would just like to see Watson look like he belongs as one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the NFL, even if it is among the bottom 10. Instead, Cleveland fans rightfully are wishing for a variety of other backup quarterbacks, including their own, because Watson cannot reach that low, low expectation on the field.
