Bayern Munich faced Atlético Madrid away in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. In a game where Bayern were, by the accounts of their own fans, the underdogs, Bayern emerged victorious with a comfortable 2-0 win. Goals from Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer placed the Bavarians in eighth position on the table.
Karl has long been a controversial subject. The recent decline in his quality and output has been heavily attributed to an attitude problem, making this goal as important for Karl as it was
for the team. For the teenager, it meant a chance to show everyone who had deemed him unfit to play for Bayern that they were wrong. Following the game, Max Eberl stepped up to back the youngster, citing his importance.
“Lennart Karl is an important player for us. We’ve never questioned that,” Eberl said, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.
“He worked just as hard as everyone else today. He was incredibly hard-working, and then he rewarded himself with a goal,” Eberl stated.
BFW Commentary
It is clear to everyone that the club values Karl, given the number of chances they have provided him so far. Therefore, Eberl’s statement is perhaps not him simply reiterating that—it could be something else altogether.
This may be an attempt to soften the backlash Karl could face for his post-goal celebration: a gesture mimicking babbling and shutting his ears. It is understandable that the vitriol following his recent performances could affect him, but constantly reacting to the audience sends the wrong message.
A vicious cycle of criticism and Karl’s subsequent reactions could ensue, and the sad part is that the only person it truly affects is Karl himself. An unfortunate part of this profession is learning to shut out criticism, and with age, hopefully, the youngster learns to navigate it.
