Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton met with the media after today’s practice and was asked if Bo Nix and other starters would play in their preseason finale on Friday Night. Payton told reporters he would not go through the roster telling them who will or will not play, but said Nix “probably will not play” vs. the Vikings.
I am assuming that if Nix is not playing in the finale, we will not see many of the Broncos’ key starters suit up for the preseason opener on Friday Night. That is not confirmed, but based on the fact that Nix will not be playing and they have been adding some extra depth throughout the roster, I think we’ll see a lot of the Broncos’ second- and third-stringers.
If Nix does not indeed play on Saturday Night, he will have sat out two of the three Broncos preseason games. However, in the one game he did play, he led the Broncos offense to a touchdown and then followed that up with a field goal. 10-points in limited action is a good enough sample size for me. He participated in every training camp practice and looked sharp in his lone preseason action, so he looks ready to go for Week 1 vs. the Kansas City Chiefs.
With Nix likely not playing, we will likely see the Broncos’ backup quarterback competition continue. Veteran Jarrett Stidham had the start in the opener and was the first quarterback off the bench last week, so we’ll see if he gets the start or not vs. the Vikings. He has been competing with quarterback Sam Ehlinger for the backup job, but Head Coach Sean Payton has publicly downplayed the competition, so we’ll see what happens on Friday Night.
We will find out closer to the game which Broncos players are expected to play, but by the sound of it, we likely won’t see many of the Broncos key players and starters, including quarterback Bo Nix.
