In our “Let’s Argue” series, Mark Gunnels considers the hot takes, wacky predictions and unpopular opinions of Kansas City Chiefs fans from all over the world.
I would prefer Bain/Bailey, Sadiq, and Delane at 9 before any Tackle or WR at 9.
Can I just say this first?
I’m so glad the NFL Draft is finally here.
Perhaps the Chiefs’ early elimination from playoff contention forced us to look ahead to the draft. Typically, we don’t worry about the draft until late January or early February.
While having a top-10
pick is a luxury, I truly hope Kansas City never finds itself in this position again during the era of quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Excuse my soapbox moment, but back to the matter at hand.
The consensus amongst Chiefs Kingdom seems to be a pass rusher or receiver at pick No. 9. And that’s where I’m at as well. If I had to prioritize, I would say pass rusher, then receiver.
As much as I want Mahomes to have a blue-chip pass catcher, the inability to pressure opposing quarterbacks was so poor that I can’t ignore it.
Miami defensive end Rueben Bain Jr. is my guy.
I am completely ok with the Chiefs taking [Mansoor] Delane or [Jermod] McCoy. Most would be upset, but I’m good with the selections
I’m part of the group that would be livid if the Chiefs select a cornerback this high.
Look, I understand Trent McDuffie was the exception for being taken in the first round. However, looking at general manager Brett Veach’s track record, he’s proven to be good at finding defensive backs in the later rounds.
See cornerbacks Jaylen Watson, Joshua Williams, Bryan Cook, and Nohl Williams for examples. As I alluded to earlier, the first two selections should be a pass rusher and a receiver. I wouldn’t entertain taking a corner until pick No. 40 at the earliest.
KC should 1000% try to extend Jaylen Moore before the draft on a team-friendly deal. If he doesn’t agree, use it as leverage to possibly draft his replacement.
We’re not even sure Jaylon Moore will start at right tackle.
Should he be the favorite?
Absolutely, but there is a world where Esa Pole beats him out, or the organization drafts his replacement, as you stated.
Personally, I believe the discussion about right tackle is being overblown.
Could the Chiefs improve there? Sure.
Nonetheless, everything can’t be perfect. The other four offensive line positions range from good to great. If Moore is just average, you’re looking at a top ten, maybe top five unit in all of football.
Depending on Moore’s performance, I wouldn’t expect contract talks until next offseason.
Cutting Jawaan Taylor while keeping Jaylon Moore was a huge mistake as Chiefs don’t have 1 solid, serviceable player there now
Once again, not every position can be great.
This is why the NFL has a salary cap. I would be concerned if the Chiefs didn’t have Josh Simmons, Kingsley Suamataia, Creed Humphrey, and Trey Smith next to Moore or whoever ends up starting at right tackle.
