The Chargers announced the signing of veteran safety Marcus Maye on Tuesday following the injury to rookie safety R.J. Mickens against the Chiefs. In a corresponding move, the team is releasing veteran running back Royce Freeman from the practice squad.
Maye last played for the Chargers in 2024 when he appeared in four games with one start. He ended the season with 12 total
tackles, two pass breakups, and an interception. In all, Maye has 81 total starters under his belt and has played in 92 total games in his career.
Freeman was signed in recent weeks as the team awaited the return of rookie first-rounder Omarion Hampton. With veteran Hassan Haskins’ return from IR just around the corner, Freeman’s presence on the practice squad was no longer needed.
