All of Duke’s freshman recruits are intriguing in one way or another, but we’re really curious about Bryson Howard.
A 6-4 player out of Frisco, Texas, Howard’s dad, Josh, played for Wake Forest, and had a long career in the NBA.
So what does Bryson bring to Duke?
Well, versatility for one thing. At 6-4, Howard can play in the frontcourt or the backcourt, and with a 6-11 wingspan, he should be capable of guarding bigger players. In his senior season in high school, Howard averaged 3.2 steals per game,
which suggests good things on the way for Duke.
From the Chronicle:
“Howard’s willingness to launch from beyond the arc certainly invites comparisons to former Duke guard Isaiah Evans, who had an outsized impact in just two years with the Blue Devils — in fact, Howard might take on a role very similar to Evans’ in the now-pro’s own freshman season…Howard will likely serve as a spark plug off the bench for Scheyer to deploy whenever he chooses…And like Evans, the frequency and length of Howard’s appearances will also be dependent on his ability to contribute on both ends of the floor.”
That’s probably about right, and not just for Howard. With the depth this team has, everyone is going to have to defend hard, or they won’t get much time. Howard’s dad was a terrific defender, and our guess is that he will have taught him a lot about both ends of the court.
