Over the weekend, rumors circulated online about the status of WWE and AAA’s Santos Escobar. The speculation arose due to his loss in the Rey de Reyes final on Saturday (March 14) in Puebla, Mexico, during which many felt Escobar looked injured or otherwise distracted.
Talk of a possible release was quickly shot down, as it seemed to be based on WWE not moving Escobar from the “Alumni” section of its website after re-signing him to a multi-year contract last fall. But apparently there was something
to the injury concerns.
An overnight report from Fightful Select said the 41-year-old Escobar went into Saturday night’s 4-way hurt, and the injury worsened during the match. Santos had an arm issue that started while he was working with El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. during a house show the weekend of Jan. 31. The hope at the time was that it wasn’t a torn muscle, but if he wasn’t before Rey de Reyes — it is now. Escobar is set for surgery tomorrow (March 19) to repair a triceps tear. Recovery will likely take months.
WWE was rumored to have big plans for the former El Hijo del Fantasma when they re-signed him to a supposedly lucrative deal last year. If they still do, those plans will have to be on hold for now, like the rest of his feud with Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr.
