The Cubs defeated the Brewers in Game 1 of the doubleheader 6-4. Owen Caissie hit his first MLB home run and drove in three, and Willi Castro hit a three-run blast for his first Cubs homer. Daniel Palencia recorded his 17th save with a game-ending double play.
Full recap of Game 1 tomorrow morning, along with a recap of Game 2. Meanwhile, here are some notes on Game 1 from BCB’s JohnW53:
Matthew Boyd had not walked three batters in an inning since Sept. 4, 2022, with the Mariners. He did it in relief,
and two were intentional. The last time he walked three as a starter was July 13, 2019, with the Tigers: leadoff walk, bunt, walk, fly out, walk, 2-run single, strikeout.
Willi Castro’s three-run homer in the third inning made it the Cubs’ first inning with three runs in 143, since the sixth inning at Milwaukee on July 30. They had had one four-run inning since then, in the second inning at St. Louis on Aug. 9. They had not scored or scored one or two runs in 79 consecutive innings before Castro homered.
Here’s all the rest of the info you will need for the second game of today’s doubleheader.
Cubs lineup:
Brewers lineup:
Jameson Taillon, RHP vs. Brandon Woodruff, RHP

Here, I wrote some stuff about Jameson Taillon last night for the game that wasn’t played, so you get to read it again.
You know Taillon has missed about six weeks with a calf injury. He had a decent run of starts from early April to mid June but wasn’t great in his last couple before the injury. One of those was against the Brewers, June 19 at Wrigley Field. Hoping for better tonight.
Brandon Woodruff missed a year and a half after shoulder surgery. He’s basically picked up where he left off, with a 2.06 ERA and 0.737 WHIP in seven starts since his return last month.
The last time he faced the Cubs was Aug. 30, 2023, almost two years ago, and I post that boxscore link just to show you how much the Cubs have changed in two years.
As for today? Well, we shall see. Woodruff went only four innings and 65 pitches in his last start, so he might be pitch-limited this evening.

Today’s game is on Marquee Sports Network. You can find out if Marquee is available via a provider in your area here.

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page, titled “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of week/date) game threads.” It will contain every post related to that particular game, including the First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread, as well as the recap when it’s published. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post.
You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). The StoryStream for each game can also be found in that section.
The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at 90 minutes after the scheduled game time.
