The Swoosh isn’t going anywhere as Illinois has signed an extension with Nike through the year 2033.
Illinois and Nike have been partners since 1995, and this agreement makes sure the school/brand relationship won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
Illinois Director of Athletics Josh Whitman expressed his satisfaction with the new deal in a statement, saying: “We are proud of this longstanding relationship, which dates back more than 30 years and covers our 21 varsity teams and 450 student-athletes.”
With the new deal in place, every Illini athletics team will wear specified Nike equipment and accessories.
Illinois and Nike athletic partnership history
- 1995 – Illinois and Nike agreed to a multimillion dollar, all sport deal, making Nike the exclusive footwear, apparel, and equipment provider for every Illini varsity program.
- 2006 – 2016 – A follow-up all-sports agreement ran from 2006 through 2016, keeping the exclusive arrangement in place.
- 2014 – Illinois and Nike spent nearly two years redesigning the Fighting Illini’s visual identity, working with athletes, coaches, and alumni to modernize the logo and uniform system still used today.
- 2016 – Illinois signed a new 10-year deal worth roughly $44.5 million, extending exclusivity through 2025-26 and ranking among the top 20 apparel contracts in college sports.
- 2026 – Illinois signs a new deal with Nike, keeping all athletics wearing the Swoosh through 2033.
It’s clear that the relationship between Illinois and Nike is more than just a partnership. It’s two brands that value the same thing: success.
