The San Francisco 49ers signed quarterback Adrian Martinez to the practice squad. Martinez recently cleared waivers after being cut by the New York Jets. As the 49ers find out what they have in rookie
Kurtis Rourke, Martinez can play the scout team role for Caleb Williams and Sam Darnold, leading up to the final two games of the season.
The 49ers will likely face a mobile quarterback in the Wild Card round, whether it’s Jalen Hurts or Baker Mayfield — barring the bye week. So, there’s a role for Martinez during practice.
The 49ers also had a pair of tryouts, per the NFL’s transaction wire. Guards Iosua Opeta and Aiden Williams were brought in. Both players played right guard for their respective teams during the preseason.
The 49ers are likely bringing in a pair of offensive linemen in the event Spencer Burford, whose knee and ankle “checked out pretty good,” according to Kyle Shanahan, can’t practice. On Monday, Shanahan said Burford was expected to practice this week, but things can certainly change over a couple of days.
