One of the most admirable characters in the sport in recent years is without a doubt Niclas Füllkrug—a true example of a late bloomer who hit his best years far later than one would expect. His late breakthrough earned him a last-minute call-up to the FIFA World Cup in 2022, where he was underutilized by manager Hansi Flick, but played an incredible role whenever selected.
Fast forward a few years, and Füllkrug’s career looked like it was going to fizzle out after an unsuccessful transfer to West
Ham United. Recently, though, the German striker has been in spectacular form with his former club, Werder Bremen, and is currently the league’s top scorer ahead of Harry Kane and other great players.
It seems as though his fine form has put him back in the spotlight, as Sky Germany reports that Füllkrug will be getting his first call-up from Jürgen Klopp for the upcoming fixtures against Serbia and the Netherlands, assuming nothing extraordinary happens.
Füllkrug has played just two games for the German national team since 2024, with his most recent appearance being a start against France in the Nations League 3rd-place playoff in June 2025. Needless to say, he wasn’t exactly on the radar for Julian Nagelsmann over the last couple of years, but with the start he has had for Werder Bremen, he could propel himself into a major role.
Would you start Füllkrug in the next two Nations League matches? Or is Füllkrug better off coming in as a substitute? Let us know in the comments!
