On Monday afternoon, the Colorado Rockies and Major League Baseball announced that Rockies starting catcher Hunter Goodman had been named National League Player of the Week for the week of September 6th, 2025. It’s Goodman’s first time winning such an award.
The American League Player of the Week was Los Angeles Angels outfielder Jo Adell.
Goodman, 25, is enjoying a career year in his third season as a big leaguer. Appearing mostly as the Rockies’ primary
backstop, Goodman is hitting .284/.330/.541 with 29 home runs, 86 RBIs, and 133 total base hits. All of those represent franchise records for a primary catcher. His 3.2 wins above replacement per Baseball Reference ties Chris Iannetta (2008) for most WAR by a primary catcher in franchise history. A first-time All-Star, he is just the second Rockies catcher ever to be named to the Midsummer Classic.
During the week ending September 6th, Goodman appeared in five games—four as a catcher and one as the designated hitter. He went 10-for-21 at the plate with two doubles, three home runs, and ten RBI.
“If you know ‘Goody’ behind the scenes and how he prepares and studies for each pitcher, it wouldn’t surprise you that he doesn’t just hit homers – he’s a good hitter overall,” said Rockies manager Warren Scheffer.
Goodman was also praised by starting pitcher Kyle Freeland for the game he called during the Rockies’ sole win of the week: a 3-0 shutout of the San Diego Padres in which Freeland worked eight shutout innings with ten strikeouts, no walks, and allowed just two hits.
Freeland mentioned following the game that he never shook off Goodman’s calls during the outing.
Goodman was also named the Rockies’ Heart and Hustle award winner for the 2025 season.
