A few days ago, it was reported that Rasenballsport Leipzig were considering sacking current head coach Ole Werner just a year and a 3rd place finish in the Bundesliga after his appointment, with his replacement said to be former Bayern Munich player and youth team coach Martin Demichelis. The Red Bull-selling construct were to hold a decisive meeting first, however, to set in stone whether to let go of Werner or not.
Well, you read the headline. According to a recent report by Florian Plettenberg,
Leipzig have chosen to get rid of Werner.
Ole Werner has been relieved of his duties by RB Leipzig with immediate effect. His assistant coaches Tom Cichon and Patrick Kohlmann have also been dismissed. Clear plan behind the scenes for weeks, as exclusively revealed on our Transfer Update show at Sky. Decision made by board around Oliver Mintzlaff, Jürgen Klopp and Mario Gomez. Martin Demichelis is set to become new RB Leipzig head coach.
Oh, yeah. Did you know former Bayern forward Gomez has been part of Leipzig’s board since 2022? In turn with announcing the decision of Gomez and Co., Plettenberg of course also announced that the signing of Demichelis is a done deal. In a follow up tweet, Plettenberg added some more details:
Martin Demichelis to RB Leipzig – DONE DEAL
Full agreement is now in place. 45 y/o from RCD Mallorca will become the successor to Ole Werner. RB Leipzig are triggering the €2.5m release clause. Signing soon. Former Bayern star set for his first head coaching job in the Bundesliga.
With Sebastian Hoeneß, Demichelis will become the second former Bayern academy manager to manage in the 2026/27 Bundesliga season. It could have been three if Erik Ten Hag had not crashed and burned at Bayer Leverkusen, but what can you do?
