Myself and my good friend and host of the PODcast, Meko Scott, are back with a new episode of, ‘Before the Roar,’ where we take a look ahead to the Detroit Lions’ second preseason game of 2026 against the Washington Commanders.
After a productive Week 1 of the preseason where the Lions ultimately fell short against the Cincinnati Bengals, many players vying for a roster spot will have another big opportunity in the Lions’ only preseason game at Ford Field this year. And similarly to last week’s format,
we breakdown several players that have the most to gain and lose against the Commanders.
As most of you could have probably predicted, the first player we discuss in this week’s episode is center Seth McLaughlin. With starting center Cade Mays expected to miss between 8-10 weeks, there is a real competition taking place at center. Can McLaughlin do enough to unseat Juice Scruggs? This will be the area of the game that I have my eyes on the most this week. Beyond the center position, we also discuss what we need to see from players like running back Sione Vaki and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez.
On the other side of the coin, there are some players that are going to be more or less fighting for a roster spot this Saturday. Defensive lineman Mehki Wingo certainly has some ground to makeup in what is quickly becoming a crowded defensive line room, and quaterback Luke Altmyer likely has an uphill climb ahead of him to make the final 53-man roster.
