Harry Kane has made it clear that his decision to extend his contract with Bayern Munich was about more than just the club, the city, or the opportunity to compete for major trophies. His relationship with Vincent Kompany has also played an important role in making Munich feel like the perfect place to continue his career.
Interestingly, Kane revealed that Kompany never put pressure on him to sign a new deal. Instead, the two shared an open conversation about how things were going at Bayern, with
the manager allowing the situation to develop naturally.
Kane also highlighted the respect he has for Kompany’s coaching philosophy, particularly his insistence that every player, regardless of experience or reputation, must meet the same standards.
Kane explained Kompany’s role in his decision to stay.
“Vince and I haven’t really discussed the contract. Obviously, he was a player himself not that long ago, so he understands exactly what’s going through a player’s mind. Vince is the type of manager and coach who believes that if you don’t want to be here, then you shouldn’t be here. We believe we’re on the right track, and we believe we have a great team, but he never put any pressure on me,” Kane said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We had one conversation about four weeks ago, more of an open discussion about how things were going rather than about the contract itself. And I respect that a lot. I have a great deal of respect for the boss. I respect his values and the way he pushes everyone. It doesn’t matter how many games you’ve played, whether you’ve made 500 appearances or you’re a young player just coming through.
“He expects the same standards in training and in matches. That’s my mentality too. That’s how I see things as well. So, in that respect, we think alike. And ever since he arrived at the club, I think we’ve been a perfect match.”
That last line is very telling.
Kane and Kompany clearly share a similar mentality when it comes to professionalism, preparation, and expectations. Both want to compete for the biggest trophies, and neither appears particularly interested in lowering standards for anyone.
For Bayern, that relationship could be just as important as the contract extension itself. Keeping Kane through 2029 means retaining an elite striker, but it also means maintaining one of the central pieces of Kompany’s project.
Apparently, the manager and his star striker are very much on the same page. And that is excellent news for Bayern.
