Newcastle United have been scouting Everton midfielder James Garner, according to a report from The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder.
Ryder revealed that “Newcastle United have checked out Everton star James Garner
in recent weeks — but no serious talks between the two clubs have taken place at this stage.”
The insider added that the 24-year-old defensive midfielder “has an extra year option on his contract,” meaning any deal “would take him to 2027 with his existing deal and mean Newcastle would be looking at a fee of over £20m.”
However, Newcastle’s midfield depth suggests a move is unlikely in the near term.
“With Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and Joelinton the first-choice stars in Eddie Howe’s midfield engine room — and Joe Willock, Lewis Miley, and Jacob Ramsey providing depth — a central midfielder is not a priority for the Magpies in the next two windows,” Ryder wrote. “Newcastle may only turn to a new midfield target of that ilk if one of their senior stars leave St James’ Park.”
Garner has been a key figure for Everton this season, starting every Premier League match so far and contributing a goal and an assist in 11 games.
His Premier League experience and versatility have made him an appealing option for clubs seeking depth, but Newcastle appear to be maintaining a wait-and-see approach rather than actively pursuing a transfer for the Toffee.
