One of the big stories in pro wrestling this week involves Nixon Newell (fka Tegan Nox in WWE) and Miranda Alize walking out of AEW at last Saturday’s Collision taping. They were not happy that that their
tag team match was scheduled to only last three minutes, but said there was “no bad blood” with AEW management as a result of their decision to leave. Even so, many fans assume Tony Khan will not book them again for AEW or ROH after what happened.
The latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter includes the following reactions to this incident from the independent wrestling scene.
“One person involved with the independent scene said they didn’t believe this publicity would help get Newell bookings even though this became kind of the talk in wrestling and some indie promoters think that controversy will help sell tickets and they aren’t just two random women. But one person who books independent talent said they disagreed. ‘Wasn’t it just the other week you were talking about wrestlers who had leverage not wanting to do business? How about wrestlers with zero leverage? Nixon isn’t gonna get work out of this. She wasn’t getting work before and was crying about it. She asks way too much money and sells zero tickets on her name alone. Usual WWE brain rot.’”
In this context, the phrase “WWE brain rot” appears to mean a former WWE star who is grossly overvaluing themselves on the independent wrestling scene, whether that’s from the standpoint of money, not wanting to lose matches, or both.
Newell says she plans to wrestle for one more year before calling it quits, so I guess we’ll see soon enough how this story affects her indie bookings, if at all.
Do you think Nixon Newell and Miranda Alize made a dumb mistake when they walked out of AEW Collision, or is their value up now that so many people in the wrestling world are talking about them? Let me know in the comments below, Cagesiders.
