It was not comfortable, and it certainly was not easy, but this time of year, the only thing that matters is surviving and advancing. That is exactly what Mark Pope’s Kentucky Wildcats did Thursday in Nashville, defeating the Missouri Tigers 78-72 in Round 2 of the SEC Tournament.
For much of the afternoon, Kentucky appeared to be in control. The Wildcats built a 12-point lead in the first half and carried a 38-to-29 advantage into halftime after a balanced offensive performance on both ends of the floor.
But Missouri did not go away quietly. The Tigers battled back in the second half and turned what once looked like a comfortable Kentucky win into a tense finish.
Oweh leads the way again
Once again, Otega Oweh served as the steady presence for Kentucky.
Oweh finished with 21 points and delivered several key plays in the closing minutes, including a critical layup and a defensive stop that helped Kentucky regain control after Missouri briefly took the lead late in the game.
Through the first two games of the SEC Tournament, Oweh has been Kentucky’s most reliable offensive option, consistently stepping up whenever the Wildcats need a big basket.
Missouri storms back
After Kentucky looked poised to pull away, Missouri mounted a strong push in the second half.
Forward Mark Mitchell led the charge for the Tigers, finishing with 32 points, including 23 in the second half. His scoring fueled Missouri’s comeback as the Tigers erased Kentucky’s lead and even moved in front with just over two minutes remaining.
For a brief moment, it appeared the Wildcats might let the game slip away.
Instead, they answered when it mattered most.
Aberdeen and Chandler provide key support
Kentucky received key contributions across the lineup.
Denzel Aberdeen finished with 16 points and seven assists, and his basket with under 30 seconds remaining gave Kentucky the lead for good.
Collin Chandler added 15 points and three steals, providing energy and defensive pressure that helped swing momentum back in Kentucky’s favor.
Those performances helped Kentucky withstand Missouri’s late push and close out the game at the free-throw line.
Survive and advance
For the second straight day, Kentucky did exactly what teams must do this time of year.
Win.
The Wildcats now advance to the SEC Tournament quarterfinals, where they will face top-seeded Florida in Nashville.
It may not have been perfect, but Kentucky is still playing basketball in March.
And sometimes, that is all that matters.
After the game the media spoke with the team, here’s a recap of what they said.
