DID YOU KNOW?
Marquette men’s soccer has their team stats going all the way back to 2005 on GoMarquette.com? You can just click through all of the stat pages and see anything you want to see!
For example!
You can find out that not only does Marquette have just five goals in seven Big East matches, but that’s the fewest goals they’ve scored in conference play since 2006! That year, Marquette scored three goals in their second year in the Big East while losing all 11 matches that they played. You can also find out that you have to go all the way back to 2007 and 2008 to find the last time that Marquette finished conference play with a single digit goal total. They had six goals in each campaign, going 1-9-1 and 1-8-2 respectively, and that capped off a run of four straight years to start the stat archive with league play goal totals in single digits.
Oh, right, I didn’t say this part: Marquette scored just nine goals in 11 matches last year, which was David Korn’s first year in charge of the Golden Eagles. They have to score five goals in Friday’s season finale in order to avoid back-to-back single goal Big East seasons since before Barack Obama was elected President of the United States.
“Oh, come on, Andy, you’re being mean, the move to divisional play is limiting Marquette to just eight Big East matches this year and last year, only scoring six goals in 11 matches is much worse.” 1) They scored 11 in 2023 with Akron in the league for an eight match slate, which led to Louis Bennett being escorted out of his job, and 2) They scored 11 in seven matches in the timeshifted and COVID-protocol’d 2020 season.
Seeing as four of Marquette’s five Big East goals came against DePaul, I’m not holding my breath in anticipation.
Yeah, it’s the season finale, and seeing as Marquette is now 7-6-2 overall after starting out the year 3-0-2 — that’s a mark of 4-6-0 since then! — I’m pretty okay with letting things wrap up so we can go focus on something else.

Marquette is 4-6-1 all time against Villanova. Last year’s 3-2 win out in the Philadelphia sprawl snapped a run of two straight Wildcats victories, which means that MU hasn’t beaten VU in Milwaukee since 2018.
Two teams just playing out the string here, as Villanova has just six points in Big East play and thus can not catch up to either Georgetown (19 points) in first place in the East Division or the four-way group of teams at 13 points to decide who gets the two wildcard spots in the conference tournament. In fact, Villanova is already guaranteed to finish last in the East Division because St. John’s is at 10 points and VU can only get to nine if they beat Marquette. FUN FACT: That current standings situation is because Villanova lost their second-to-last Big East match to St. John’s, 3-1.
Officially, Villanova isn’t coming off that STJ match, as they hosted Holy Family University on Tuesday afternoon. HFU is a Division 2 program in Philadelphia, and they came in at 5-7-3 on the year. As you might expect, Villanova ragdolled them, going up 2-0 in the first 10 minutes and tacking on six more in the second half. It was a bit of a wild match, as Villanova outshot Holy Family 27-15, so it’s not like the Tigers had nothing going on. In fact, they actually outshot VU 9-6 in the first half!
As a result of the points stacked up in that match, Fynn Lahrsen and Sam Nyenka are now tied atop the Villanova points list with nine each. Lahrsen added a goal so he’s got the team lead in that column with four now. Nyenka had two assists to get to three on the year and he pairs that with his three goals to end up even at nine points. Lahrsen is the leader in shots with 30 on the year, and MU probably has to be careful of Michael teDuits, as he is #2 on the team in shots with 23, even though he only has a goal and five assists on the year.
Alex Yagudayev has played six of Villanova’s seven Big East matches, so I presume he’s getting the call in net on Friday. I have to guess at that because Sebastian Cutler DeJesus did play the full 90 against Holy Family, but again, the Big East starting thing. Yagudayev has played the majority of the minutes this season, going the full 90 minutes in all 11 of his starts. The thing is that Yagudayev has worse stats than DeJesus. There may be a difficulty level situation there, as I imagine it’s easier to shutout Holy Family and VMI than trying to navigate a Big East slate. Still, though, Yagudayev is giving up 1.73 goals per 90 minutes of action, and he’s only stopping 71% of shots on frame. VU is underwater in shot attempts per game this season, but as we discussed earlier, Marquette has a problem on the offensive end of the field this season.
