What is the story about?
The Mariners lost pathetically yesterday to drop the series to the A’s. The beauty and the curse of the long MLB season is that win or lose, you get to go back and do it again the next day. Big win? You get to go back out the next day and keep trying to build momentum. Tough loss? You get the opportunity to flush it with a win. But at a certain point there’s no dignity left to salvage. This team has reached that point. The Mariners don’t get to play today, they have to play today at 1:10 PST.

- Lazaro Montes was reportedly feeling just fine yesterday after leaving Friday’s game early. The best thing the Mariners can do for the rest of this season is avoid any and all major injuries, and thankfully it appears that Laz did just that.
Around the league…
- During Friday night’s game in Denver, umpire Doug Eddings made himself the main character in a way that only an umpire can, by telling Dominican rookie pitcher Hancel Rincon that he needed to straighten his hat. Cardinals manager Oli Marmol did not care for the instruction one bit and was ejected for chirping at Eddings after he came on the field to make a pitching change. After the game, Eddings refused to accept any responsibility whatsoever for his role in the altercation, and instead tried to shift most of the blame onto Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman, who Eddings claims was the one that pointed out the hat, a claim that Goodman vehemently denied. Following all of this nonsense, both teams started the game with tipped caps in a comprehensive middle finger to Eddings. Rincon returned to the mound with his hat tipped back and managed to record his first career strikeout yesterday.
- The New York Yankees placed outfielder Trent Grisham on the 10-day IL yesterday after he left Friday’s game early with a right hamstring strain. Grisham missed about three weeks earlier this season with the same injury and the severity of this strain is not yet known, but the Yankees would certainly like to have him available for the playoffs. Jasson Dominguez was recalled in the corresponding move, and the return of Aaron Judge could be as soon as this week, as Judge has alluded he may forgo a minor league rehab assignment.

- The Chicago White Sox may soon be in need of a new home, and renderings for a potential new stadium were released recently along the river in downtown Chicago, which at the very least shows that the White Sox are a smarter organization than the Bears.
- Ken Rosenthal reported on his podcast that the constant chants of “sell the team” at Angels home games were a not-insignificant part of his decision to eventually do so. Remember kids, bullying works.
- The Rockies will likely have new majority owners next season as the Penner Sports Group is expected to increase their ownership stake from 40% to 75%, which will take the Monfort’s stake down to about 20%.
