As we’ve been hearing about for the past week or so, Swerve Strickland tore the meniscus in one of his knees all the way back in 2019. He’s been working through it ever since.
AEW worked the injury into Strickland’s recent feud with the company’s Unified champion Kazuchika Okada. When that program culminated this past Sunday at Forbidden Door in London, Swerve was written off with storyline injuries inflicted by Okada and the returning Wardlow. Afterwards, the former AEW World champ told his fans
at an afterparty that he was getting surgery today (Weds., Aug. 27).
And look what showed up on who’s X… Swerve’s X… a few hours ago:
… and on his Instagram Story…

No word yet on when Strickland is expected back. We’d guess around Forbidden Door or Worlds End, but with modern sports medicine and a driven performer like Swerve, we wouldn’t be shocked if it was a bit sooner. Either ways, the former AEW World champ goes on the shelf at the same time as another of the company’s hottest stars — Will Ospreay — is facing a longer layoff due to neck surgery.
Interesting times for Tony Khan. We’ll see that goes as we send best wishes to Strickland — and Ospreay — for speedy and complete recoveries.
