For most of this year, we considered it a foregone conclusion that John Cena would wrap up his all-time great WWE run in Boston. The record-breaking 17-time WWE World champion hails from nearby West Newbury, Massachusetts, and while he’s not as “Bahstan” as Ben Affleck or David Ortiz, he’s always been associated with New England’s biggest city.
But an area that’s celebrated championships in all four major U.S. sports this century decided they weren’t willing to pay for the honor of hosting Cena’s
last match, so that’ll be happening in Washington, D.C. next month. That doesn’t mean the Never Seen 17’s final trip to Beantown as an active WWE Superstar for Raw tonight (Nov. 10isn’t a big deal, though.
He’s been promoting it even more than usual on social media, and the rumor mill tells us WWE has big plans for Cena tonight (you can read more about that here, if you’re so inclined). And the folks at Boston’s TD Garden did more than just hang some memorabilia or put “Thank You, Cena” on the marquee outside. They commemorated John’s 20+ years in WWE by painting a full wall backstage with highlights from his career that happened in Boston, like his 2014 Money in the Bank Ladder Match win.
Someone who’s co-starred in a Cena highlight or two over the years, CM Punk, shared video of the tribute on his Instagram Story:
If you get there before it expires, Punk’s Story also has a video of a goofy Cena and serious Punk signing stacks of posters, and the image of the stage from the top of this post.
