Jayden Daniels, Commanders under scrutiny after another game management mistake
On fourth-and-2 from the 49ers’ 13-yard line early in the second quarter of what became a 49ers’ 23-17 win, Washington coach Dan Quinn decided to go for it. Running back Rachaad White was flagged for an illegal shift, which would have negated a successful
play. But before that, Daniels scrambled right to bide more time — and then threw the ball out of bounds, looking as if he wanted to avoid a sack.
“I just gotta execute better in that situation regardless of a flag or not,” Daniels said after the game. “Fourth down … don’t die with the ball, so I have to be better in that spot.
Said ESPN analyst Troy Aikman on the broadcast: “You don’t throw (the) ball away on fourth down. You gotta at least give your receiver an opportunity.”
Video circulated after the play of a frustrated Quinn. Earlier on the broadcast, ESPN’s Laura Rutledge reported that Quinn had said he would stand closer to first-year offensive coordinator David Blough in critical situations to make sure the Commanders avoided such embarrassments as allowing the clock to run out in overtime — the error that cost them the opportunity to kick a game-winning field goal last week against the New York Giants. Instead, the NFC East rivals finished in a 27-27 tie, and Quinn, his coaches and his quarterback were skewered for much of the past week.
“Our time today as a team was spent on the how and why to make sure that it never does (happen) again,” Quinn told reporters last Monday afternoon. “So, yesterday’s ending was the biggest example, but we’ve got a lot of s— to clean up from yesterday’s game. And trust me, everyone in this building, starting with me, feels that urgency.”

Commanders fans should brace for the worst after Terry McLaurin’s injury
Terry McLaurin has been the beating heart of Washington Commanders football almost since he was drafted as a third-round steal in 2019. But now, fans should prepare for the worst after a potentially devastating injury setback.
After catching an impressive 27-yard gain on Washington’s first offensive play during their Monday Night Football loss to the San Francisco 49ers, things took a dark turn for McLaurin. The wide receiver went down with a non-contact injury, and concerns were immediate after he grabbed his knee.
McLaurin was carted off the field and ruled out for the rest of the game. It seemed bad, and the reaction of the players from both sides told fans all they needed to know.

Dan Quinn’s fourth-down defense reignites calls for Commanders to fire him
“I definitely knew it was fourth down. We were going for it, and I think with the illegal shift, there is not a penalty to go for a field goal. Like, it’s the turn(over) on downs, I think somebody had asked me.”

Commanders-49ers on ‘Monday Night Football’: What We Learned from San Francisco’s 23-17 win
Daniels almost makes amends for previous loss. There could not have been a more trepidatious week for Jayden Daniels to play under the prime-time spotlight. His brain fart in Week 5 against the Giants, taking a sack and allowing time to run out in overtime when the Commanders were in position for a game-winning field goal, likely hung heavy over Daniels and the team during their Monday night preparations. That certainly looked to be the case early on, as Washington got little going and the defense appeared overpowered by a mighty 49ers crew.
Daniels flipped a switch on the other side of half, though, completely rewriting the narrative of a game that initially looked to be too much for the Commanders. After penalties derailed Washington’s first third-quarter possession, Daniels led back-to-back scoring drives of 56 and 66 yards, carving up San Francisco’s defense despite Terry McLaurin being carted off in the opening frame with a knee injury.
Daniels, who went 22 of 30 for 212 passing yards, two touchdowns and a 114.9 passer rating in the second half, then saw two different chances to lead a game-winning drive and quiet the noise from the past eight days. He not only came up just short, he unfortunately also made a massive mistake on each possession.
On the first, he was forced to burn a timeout after letting the play clock run down on a fourth-and-8, which meant the Commanders would have one less chance to stop the clock if they didn’t convert. They did, but turned it over on downs a few plays later, leaving Washington only two timeouts already under the two-minute warning.
After Washington’s defense, which had turned it on to make life hell for Brock Purdy and Co. throughout the second half, got Daniels the ball back, he again committed a huge no-no by intentionally grounding the ball to avoid a sack just after he’d led the offense to San Francisco’s 28-yard line.
That left him with only a hail Mary chance left, which he was sacked on. Daniels and Washington showed so much fight, but there’s always been a Jekyll-and-Hyde nature to the quarterback’s play. Much to the chagrin of Commanders fans, Hyde has reared his head at the end of the past two games.

It’s getting harder to see how the Eagles’ Jalen Hurts marriage ends well
These are all fascinating questions that will be revealed in due course, but the biggest one of all is Jalen Hurts. And after this incident with the blood clots, it’s getting harder to see a future with him under center in 2027.
It’s not because Hurts is a bad quarterback, because he clearly isn’t. But even when things looked their most optimistic, there were questions about whether the Eagles would hitch their wagons to Hurts long term after this season. Hurts’ contract extension only guarantees him $22 million following the 2026 season, and serves as an off-ramp for the team to change directions at that position if they want to.
The 2026 season was supposed to determine whether Hurts would be able to play well enough to continue on in Sean Mannion’s offense. Unfortunately, we only saw five weeks of uneven play, with Hurts at times struggling to string together drives with an injury-plagued roster and a new offensive coordinator that is still getting his feet wet.
And, Hurts also played one of those games on four hours’ sleep in another country after spending the previous night in the hospital because of concerns about blood clots.

NY Giants release running back who complained about timeshare
The New York Giants have released running back Najee Harris, a team source confirmed on Tuesday morning.
After gaining just 2 yards on four carries Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, Harris had complained about not being able to get into a rhythm as the Giants were rotating four running backs during the game.
Head coach John Harbaugh said he understood Harris’s complaint, but his message to all of the backs was to“do something” to “take the job”as the team’s No. 1 running back.
Harris won’t be given another opportunity.

Twenty-three games into his tenure as the Dallas Cowboys head coach, Brian Schottenheimer has a 9-13-1 record and the full support of ownership.
“Absolutely. There’s not any question in Jerry’s and I’s mind,” executive vice president Stephen Jones said Monday on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “He has the team. There’s no question they want to go out there and execute and make things happen. We feel really good … about our coaching staff. We just have to continue to evolve and get to a point where we can win these football games.”
