Yesterday’s news about the ACL injury to 2nd year receiver Jayden Higgins was a significant blow to the Houston Texans hopes for 2026. Most considered Higgins as the lock for WR2. And while the Texans have a solid receiver room, none of the players behind him look like viable replacements. Next man up is a thing, for sure, but Higgins was the best compliment to WR1 Nico Collins on the roster.
And, in what seems to be a make or break year for embattled franchise quarterback C.J. Stroud, losing a solid
target is not helpful. At all.
Many may point to the hopeful return of Tank Dell as an insurance policy. But, Dell and Higgins are different blades in the Swiss Army knife of Houston’s receiving corps.
Xavier Hutchinson might stand a better chance, but Hutch has had a lot of chances already to grab the brass ring and has yet to wrap his fingers around it fully.
Jared Wayne is catching a lot more than passes this off-season, as the latest “camp star” pass catcher in Houston lore. But, we’ve all seen the Devier Posey’s come and go, year after year.
All this adds up to general manager Nick Caserio having to roll up his sleeves and bring in a new face. Then hope that face fronts a mind that can grasp Nick Calley’s offense quickly, and a skillset that not only replicates Higgins’, but can do so from week 1 deep into the playoffs.
The 1st name that many are bringing up is former H-Town receiving superstar DeAndre Hopkins.
While this makes for great sports bar discussion around a pitcher of draft, the reality is Hopkins is currently a coach, no longer employed as an NFL wideout. With the number of teams out there who could use a former pro bowler, the fact that Nuk is on the sidelines speaks volumes to his ability to step into a WR2 role. Odds are we’d all love to see the 2nd best receiver in Texans history run it back in 2026. Paired with Collins and Dell, a prime D-Hop would be glorious. Unfortunately, he’s clearly past that juncture.
Another interesting idea floated on X is trading with the Arizona Cardinals for Marvin Harrison Jr. , who provides a near 1-to-1 match for Higgins’ skills.
Check out Houston Stressans’ comparison:
A potential trade package was also floated by a prominent Texans X’er, AyooNoah:
Not sure a 3rd and 5th gets it done if the Cardinals smell blood in the water, but Caserio is definitely in a win-now mode, so trading future picks for a shot at this year’s Super Bowl makes a lot of sense.
After Will Anderson Jr.’s recent comments on the mission for this team, it seems even more plausible that Caserio and crew get a deal done with another team to bring in a starter instead of sifting through the Free Agent pile.
Sharp Football Analysis dropped this list of best available NFL receivers yesterday. That’s about as fresh as it gets in light of the Higgins news.
Best 2026 NFL Free Agent Wide Receivers
- Tyreek Hill
- JuJu Smith-Schuster
- Brandin Cooks
- Curtis Samuel
- Josh Reynolds
- Deandre Carter
- Zay Jones
- D’Wayne Eskridge
- Hunter Renfrow
- Allen Lazard
- Michael Gallup
- Gabe Davis
- Malik Heath
- D.J. Turner
- Kristian Wilkerson
- River Cracraft
None of those names jump out as a plug and play replacement. Which makes me think Caserio, the draft day wheeler dealer, is likely on the phone right now trying to trade for a starter.
That player will need to
- fit the system
- bring Higgins-like qualities
- have the right personality to add to the locker room culture
- currently occupy a roster spot on a team thinking they’re better off building for 2027 and beyond than playing catch with him in 2026.
Seems that Marvin Harrison Jr. ticks all those boxes. And he’d make a great addition to the Houston Texans depth chart.
Who do you want? Nuk or Harrison? Have someone else in mind? Bring your ideas and let’s have the sports bar debate in the comments section.
