Liverpool locked down a place in the Round of 16 of the Champions League with Wednesday’s 6-0 thumping of Qarabag FK that means they finish third in the league phase of Europe’s premier cup competition.
For a side that has struggled as much as the Reds have at times this season, it’s unquestionably a big deal.
Their 2025-26 campaign, though, has been marked by a string of solid performances in the Champions League set in parallel to domestic disappointment, as after 23 matchweeks England’s defending champions sit a sad sixth and have been leapt past by Manchester United and Chelsea. As such, there will be a degree of skepticism until they can prove they can deliver in the league.
“A really important result,” was Alexis Mac Allister’s reaction. “The performance I think was good, especially the second half. We pressed really well, had the opportunities and scored some goals—which is important for our confidence. So we’re happy we went through but now it’s time to think about the Premier League.”
Mac Allister’s season has mirrored the team as a whole, largely failing to live up to the expectations set in 2024-25’s title winning campaign. His brace on Wednesday, including the game’s opener, served as a reminder of just how important the combative Argentine midfielder is to the side, and hopefully Wednesday’s goals will give him the confidence he needs to rediscover top form.
“I love getting in the box and scoring goals,” he added. “I don’t do it often, but I really like it and I think I went a little bit higher on the pitch and that allowed me to get in the box a bit more. My second was a little lucky and then it could have been a hat-trick, but the important thing is a good performance and good result.”
