Chris Waugh has clarified that Newcastle United do not have a buy-back clause for Elliot Anderson following his sale to Nottingham Forest last summer, at least not that he knows of.
Answering a supporter’s question in a Q&A, Waugh said it is “not believed” that such a clause exists in Anderson’s contract. Newcastle hoped to add that clause when talks took place in June 2024, but their position was weakened by financial pressures under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Forest
ultimately secured Anderson for what was effectively a net £15m deal—in other words, a steal. That’s because Newcastle received £35m for the midfielder but simultaneously paid £20m to bring in goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos.
Waugh noted that even on gross terms, the £35m fee was regarded inside the club as potentially undervaluing the player, but the circumstances left them little room to manoeuvre.
The deal has since looked even more costly, as Anderson has flourished at Forest and recently earned his first senior England cap, while Vlachodimos struggled to make an impact at St James’ Park and was sent out on loan to Sevilla.
