Welcome to the Morning Commute
Today we’re talking about Mizzou Football
Mizzou Football received some well-deserved weekly awards after their 45-17 win over Florida on Saturday. In what isn’t a total surprise — Austin Simmons was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week.
Simmons was 23/30 for 340 yards and two touchdowns and zero interceptions. Through the first five games, Simmons is currently in third place in the SEC with 1,287 passing yards.
On the
defensive side, junior linebacker Nicholas Rodriguez was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week.
Rodriguez had a game-high 11 tackles and currently leads the SEC with 50 tackles through five games.
The coaching staff was also in their bag on Saturday. Chip Lindsey and Corey Batoon were named SEC Conference Coordinators of the Week by CBS Sports.
Meanwhile, Eli Drinkwitz was named Paul Bear Bryant and The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week.
Looking ahead: It will be a 2:30 p.m. CST kick-off at Ole Miss on October 17th — on either ABC, ESPN, or SEC Network.

- Morning Commute from Josh Matejka: Mizzou among biggest winners of Week 5
Clearly, college football writers were impressed. Mizzou shot up the AP rankings on Sunday, settling at No. 14 after falling to No. 25 after their loss to Mississippi State. And while the AP poll can be a bit fickle at times – especially this year – Mizzou was getting its flowers from all over.
- MV3 from me: Austin Simmons Leads Mizzou to 45-17 Statement Win over Florida
23/30 for 340 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions will do. Simmons is off to an excellent start this season and is showing no signs of slowing down.
Austin Simmons is Him!
- From Jaden Lewis: What went into Mizzou’s defense in containing Jadan Baugh
Per PFF, Mizzou as a team collected its best run defense grade of the season with a 90.9, tying the 2024 season opener against Murray State, and is the best against an SEC opponent since playing Kentucky in 2018.
Mizzou’s run defense was elite on Saturday.
- Tiger Top Spin from Aaron Segal: Six weeks of work begin to pay off for Mizzou Tennis
Raga also pointed to the way the players represented Mizzou throughout the tournament, emphasizing their competitiveness and discipline. Those qualities have become an important part of the team’s development as the Tigers continue learning how to rely on one another during competition
Mizzou Tennis is building something special.
- First Serve from Aaron Segal: Mizzou’s road struggles continue as Tigers search for answers
The Tigers have shown they can compete with conference opponents. The next step is proving they can finish them, particularly away from home.
A rough start for Mizzou Volleyball to start SEC play, but the competitiveness is there.
- Mizzou Basketball Non-Conference Preview from Sam Snelling: Nebraska
Nebraska’s early BartTorvik.com rankings have the Nubs 15th overall, one spot ahead of Tennessee and one back from Texas Tech. That seems a bit high, getting Sandfort back in a boon, he’s a skilled player and an elite shooter. But the rest of the portal class is solid if unspectacular. I expect Nebraska to still be very good, but more top 30 good instead of top 15 good. Either way it should be a very competitive game in Kansas City.
It sets up to be a good one on December 12th in Kansas City between the Tigers and Huskers.
- From Jack Wiselogel: Five Takeaways from Mizzou Women’s Basketball Media Day
Harper isn’t hiding the standard she’s setting. Postseason basketball remains the goal, and when asked to be more specific, she said Mizzou wants to make the NCAA Tournament.
College hoops is around the corner — and there are NCAA Tournament expectations for Mizzou WBB in Year 2 under Kellie Harper.
- Reacts from Josh Matejka: What is Eli Drinkwitz’s best win at Mizzou?
But a 28-point win over an AP Top 10 team? In a game where you were an underdog? On Homecoming? That’s pretty damn special. And something tells me it might win this poll. But no sense in predicting without actually asking the question, is there?
