Liverpool FC’s form has been better as of late, but that hasn’t stopped rumours of FSG preparing to move on from spreading in the dirt sheets, especially with formerly rumoured target Xabi Alonso now available on the market.
It even prompted a question from a journalist in attendance for Arne Slot’s pre-match presser on Tuesday, asking if Alonso was being lined up to take over. A bizarre question because the head coach wouldn’t be privy to that.
Arne Slot responded somewhat sarcastically:
“Yes, he called
me and said: ‘What do you think about the team because I am going to take over in six months, can you tell me a little bit more?’ Or maybe earlier. Maybe he takes over tomorrow!… No, no, no. This is one of the weirdest questions I ever got.”
After the Marseille match, captain Virgil van Dijk called out the journalist for his question:
“That (question) was disrespectful.”
“Criticism is justified if you look at what we are doing in the season, especially based on last season.
“It’s been a difficult part of the season for us players and the manager as well but he has handled it well.”
Well, it’s been a season full of absurdities. Add another one to the list. Congratulations to Van Dijk on his 350th appearance and a clean sheet. A trip to Bournemouth awaits on Saturday.
