Atletico Madrid chief Enrique Cerezo says that Sunday’s match against Barcelona will be a “special game” for Julian Alvarez after the Catalans spent the summer pursuing the striker.
Los Colchoneros refused to sell Alvarez to Barcelona, despite the Argentine saying publicly he wanted a move. He ended up staying at the club and has since apologized to fans.
Cerezo feels the game on Sunday will mean a lot to Alvarez, telling Cadena Ser: “It’s a very special game for him, but well, I think he’s already
apologized, he’s already said he made a mistake, and now what he has to do is play and score goals for Atlético de Madrid.
“The truth is, we’re doing very well, and we need to improve our performance in the Champions League. I think that in the next Champions League match, we’ll try to win as always and position ourselves well to be among the top eight, if we can.”
The Atletico chief was also asked what he’d say if Joan Laporta asked about Alvarez when the two meet at the game. “He’ll get his answer,” was the blunt response.
Barcelona have scored goals for fun this season after moving Raphinha to the No. 9 position. The club also say they’ve moved on from Alvarez, with Deco claiming he’s “in the past.”
