In late June, Avery Styles wrestled his debut match and even picked up the win. Counting the pinfall was none other than Avery’s father, WWE Hall of Famer AJ Styles.
But whereas Avery’s debut took place at a Squared Circle Action event in Royston, Georgia, he will soon take to the ring in one of the country’s largest independent promotions, Game Changer Wrestling (GCW). Anyone curious to check out the young Styles can stream his first two scheduled GCW matches taking place on July 31 and August 1 via
TrillerTV.
Regarding his son’s debut, Styles later reflected on the moment on his The Phenomenally Retro Podcast. He sounded very much like a proud papa, stating that he was “blown away” by the match.
“It was a big day. Avery, my second oldest, had his first match, his debut match. It got to be so big that it went from being semi-main event to the main event of the show,” he said of Avery’s match against Ashton Martin, who AJ said has only been wrestling for about about a year or so.
“I don’t think they disappointed anyone whatsoever,” AJ said. “There’s a lot of things that we do with all this energy when we have, that young energy, that we use it in the wrong way. They used it really, really well. They didn’t rush through anything. They took their time on things they should have.”
He continued: “Listen, it’s not going to be perfect, but this is a debut match for Avery, and Ashton hadn’t had that many matches. So to see them do so well in a main event, both of them, I was blown away.”
Styles went on to say that that his own debut watch was “terrible.”
“But these guys did really, really well,” he said. “I am so impressed with everything they’ve done, their training and everything. To see them put together that match and execute it so well — blown away.”
AJ added that Avery was “better than me as far as his debut.”
During the main event for Squared Circle Action, Avery finished off Martin after executing a Styles Clash. Needless to say, AJ was very impressed by his kid’s move set.
“For him to pull off a springboard off the guardrail, little things like that, the timing, beautiful,” he said.
Avery’s July 31 match for GCW will take place in Omaha, Nebraska, and he will follow that up by competing for the promotion the following day in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
