The Houston Astros player development department has named IF Waner Luciano the Astros Player of the Month for July and RHP Bryce Mayer the Astros Pitcher of the Month for July.
Luciano, 21, batted .316 (24×76) with 15 runs, seven doubles, four home runs, 20 RBI, 21 walks, nine stolen bases and a 1.021 OPS in 22 games in July with Single A Fayetteville. For the minor league season, Luciano is batting .275 (46×167) with 27 runs, 12 doubles, seven home runs, 38 RBI, 34 walks, 15 stolen bases and an .873
OPS. Luciano was signed by the Astros as a non-drafted free agent on January 15, 2022, from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Mayer, 24, went 2-0 with a 0.47 ERA (1ER/19IP) in July with Double A Corpus Christi. He also recorded 29 strikeouts, six walks, a 0.79 WHIP and a .143 opponent batting average in four appearances, including three starts during the month. For the minor league season, Mayer has recorded a 2.61 ERA (20ER/69IP) with 100 strikeouts, a 1.13 WHIP and a .184 opponent batting average. He ranks tied for sixth in strikeouts in the Texas League this season. Mayer was drafted by the Astros in the 16th round of the 2024 MLB Draft from the University of Missouri. According to MLB.com, he’s rated as the Astros number five overall prospect and the top pitching prospect in the Astros system.
