I think it’s fair to say that Jets fans were feeling pretty good heading into the Week 4 game against the Chicago Bears. The team’s 1-2 record obscured what looked like legitimate progress through the first three weeks of the season.
Each week we take a poll of Jets fans about their confidence in the team’s direction. Prior to the Chicago game71 percent of fans who voted expressed confidence.
It was easy to tell that the number would drop after an ugly loss to the Bears, but the effect is striking.
One of the running gags of these confidence surveys is how one performance good or bad can have a monumental effect on fan confidence.
Even by the standards of these polls, however, a 53 point swing in a single week is staggering.
It’s clear Jets fans hold coaching responsible to a large extent. This week we asked fans what the team should do with Aaron Glenn. A vast majority said the second year head coach should be fired either now or after the season.
There is one positive for Glenn and this team. If a bad week can lead to a large swing in a negative direction, a good week against Cleveland might have a similar impact in the other direction. I don’t even want to think about what impact a loss to the Browns might bring.
