There is a lot of history around Boston College football.
Dating back to 1893 under head coach Joseph Drum, the Eagles have logged many good years sprinkled with many bad as well.
While we are currently in the midst of a down stretch for the program, this doe not erase the history of the Eagles. And it is an interesting history at that.
Recently, Boston College landed on an intriguing list put together by The Athletic naming the “Middling 10,” which are college football’s most average programs.
“Boston
College has the best winning percentage on this list, plus two great quarterbacks in Flutie and Matt Ryan. The case for averageness rests on BC’s single conference championship as a Big East/ACC member, with a 231-202-2 record since the Eagles joined the Big East in 1991. Peak averageness: BC won six or seven games in 10 of 12 seasons from 2013-24. It hasn’t finished ranked since 2007.”
Boston College came in at No. 8 on this list. The Eagles have an all-time winning percentage of .563 with a record of 711-549-6. The publication listed the best and worst seasons. The top was in 1940 when the Eagles went unbeaten and ended the year with a victory over Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl. In 1978, it went the other way as Boston College finished winless at 0-11 under first-year head coach Ed Chlebek. Three years later, Doug Flutie arrived and changed the tone around the program.
